Chrome gets slow from too many extensions, dozens of open tabs, and accumulated site data. These fixes keep your bookmarks and passwords safe.

Steps

  1. 1Remove extensions you don't use

Go to chrome://extensions and remove everything non-essential. Keep at most an ad-blocker and password manager.

  2. 2Turn on Memory Saver

Go to Settings > Performance and enable Memory Saver so inactive tabs sleep.

  3. 3Clear cached site data

Settings > Privacy > Clear browsing data > Cached images and files (keep passwords and history).

  4. 4Close tabs with a tab manager

Bookmark tab groups or use OneTab-style session saving instead of keeping 40 tabs open.

  5. 5Disable hardware acceleration if glitchy

If pages flicker, toggle off Settings > System > hardware acceleration and restart Chrome.

  6. 6Update Chrome

Go to Help > About Google Chrome and install pending updates.

  7. 7Scan for harmful software

Use Settings > Reset and clean up > Clean up computer on Windows.

  8. 8Create a fresh profile if needed

Add a new Chrome profile and sign in - a corrupted profile causes permanent slowness.

Good to know: Your passwords and bookmarks sync back when you sign into the same Google account, so cleanup is safe.

FAQ

Is Edge or Brave faster?

They use the same engine, so the difference is small. Fewer extensions matter more than switching browsers.
