Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Set It Up Right
Authenticator apps vs SMS vs keys - setup steps for Google, Facebook and wallets.
By DigitalNepal · Updated 2026-09-15
2FA blocks most account takeovers even when passwords leak. Ten minutes of setup protects years of photos, money and chats.
Steps
1Install an authenticator app
Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or Authy - any reputable one works.
2Enable 2-Step on Google
myaccount.google.com > Security > 2-Step Verification, scan the QR with the app.
3Enable on Facebook
Settings > Accounts Centre > Password and security > Two-factor authentication.
4Save backup codes
Print or write the 8-digit backup codes and store at home - lost phones lock you out otherwise.
Good to know: SIM-swap fraud can intercept SMS codes. Prefer app-based codes for email and financial accounts.
FAQ
What if I lose my phone?
Use backup codes to log in, then move 2FA to the new phone immediately.
