National ID (NID) Registration: Process and Uses
Where to enroll, what documents to carry, and where the NID number is actually needed.
By DigitalNepal · Updated 2026-10-04
The National Identity Card number increasingly links services from social security to licences. Enrollment is a one-time biometric visit - get details right the first time.
Steps
1Pre-register if available
Fill any online pre-registration to shorten the centre visit, and note the reference.
2Visit with citizenship
Carry original citizenship plus copies. Names and dates must match exactly.
3Complete biometrics carefully
Fingerprints, photo and signature - redo on the spot if the operator flags quality issues.
4Store the slip safely
The enrollment slip tracks your card. Photograph it as backup.
Good to know: Update records if citizenship details change later - mismatched IDs cascade into every linked service.
