KYC in Nepal: Documents, Updates and Why Accounts Freeze
What KYC needs, when to update it, and how to unfreeze a restricted account.
By DigitalNepal · Updated 2026-10-04
Banks must Know Their Customer by law. Incomplete or expired KYC is the top reason accounts get restricted - usually fixable in one branch visit.
Steps
1Gather standard proofs
Citizenship, photos, and income/source details are typical. Confirm the current list with your bank first.
2Update on life changes
New address, new phone, renewed citizenship - update promptly or OTPs and notices go nowhere.
3Watch expiry dates
Some KYC flags expire on document validity. Diarise renewals a month early.
4Unfreeze systematically
Ask exactly which document is missing, submit it, and get written confirmation of reactivation.
Good to know: Never email KYC documents to addresses from SMS. Submit only in-branch or through the official app/portal.

FAQ
Why do wallets also ask KYC?
Same law, same reason: higher limits need verified identity across banks and wallets.
